Biography

Gwendolyn Lewis received her B.S. in Library Science from Eastern Michigan University. Later she received her M.S.L.S. and Ed. S. in Administration from Wayne State University. She worked 38 years in the Detroit Public Schools District as a media specialist librarian, administrator and testing coordinator. Among the awards received by Gwendolyn was the Outstanding Administrator and Librarian of the Year Award.

Her true belief in family literacy that family and community involvement influences and reflects the quality of a child's learning inspired her to write the book, Plant A Seed Read!! 101 Activities To Motivate Youth To Read and host a family literacy radio show.

In 2010 she took on the role of storyteller which goes hand and hand with Plant a Seed ... Read!!. Storytelling encourages practical life and research skills. It develops readers and storywriters and a sense of creativity in our youth. The characters she portrays when sharing biographies are Mary MacLeod Bethune; Sojourner Truth; Coretta Scott King and Maya Angelou.

Her community service is an aid to all. It includes being self-appointed Hazelton Block Club Food Collector for Good Fellows; a Y.E.S Foundation volunteer, reading to kindergarten youths; storyteller at the Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast in Redford, Michigan 2012-2014; 2012 Woman of the Year for the American Business Woman Association, Star of Detroit Chapter; Membership in the Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority and Beta Sigma Phi Fellowship ; a member of Oak Park and Professionally Speakers Toastmasters International. a member of Detroit Story League and Past Secretary of Detroit Association of Black Storytellers where she engages adults as well as youth.

Gwendolyn also does her job of representing Michigan. She has received local and national awards in race-walking through the Michigan Senior Olympics. She has been selected as its Ambassador for Wayne County. Gwen has also received 2nd and 3rd places in the Ms. Senior Michigan Pageant, 2011&2012.

Gwendolyn Lewis is married to Joseph B. Lewis, administrator at Wayne County Community College. They have one son. She lives by her favorite motto by Adele Schelle, "If you act like a winner people will treat you like one and give you every opportunity to achieve."

Objective

To diminish the illiteracy rate with positive family literacy and storytelling.
